John Travers
John Travers has worked as a Senior Advisor and Administrator in the areas of Government economic and enterprise/industry/science policy in Ireland for more than 30 years. He was the founding CEO of Forfas (1993–2002) and of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) (2000-2001). Previously, he was Chief Economic Advisor in the Department (Ministry) of Industry and Commence and Principal Officer in the Department of the Taoiseach (Prime Minister).
In 2002, John Travers established his own economic and business consultancy. In that role he was appointed to advise the Government on a number of issues including:
• Chairman of the Interim Board of the National Tourism Development Authority charged with the rationalisation of the State’s tourism promotion and training agencies and the establishment of a single new tourism promotional body, Failte Ireland.
• Chairman of the Expert Group established to prepare a long-term strategy for the development of Irish tourism (2003)
• Chairman of the Expert Group established by Government to follow through on the implementation of the new tourism strategy (2004-2008)
Currently, he is a member of the “Board of Directors” of a number of bodies in the private and public sectors. He is Executive Director of Global Finance Academy Ireland at UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.
John is a qualified Town Planner and holds post-graduate degrees in Economic Planning and in Business (MBA) from the University of Pennsylvania (USA) and the National University of Ireland.
