Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan
Kathy Sullivan is Director of the The Battelle Center for Math & Science Education Policy at the John Glenn School of Public Affairs, The Ohio State University. She was President and Chief Executive Officer of COSI Columbus from 1996 to 2006. COSI (Center of Science and Industry) is a non-profit science center dedicated to the advancement of science, math and technology education and public literacy.
The first American woman to walk in space, Dr Sullivan is a veteran of three shuttle missions (Challenger 1984, Discovery 1990, Atlantis 1992) and a 2004 inductee to the Astronaut Hall of Fame.
Also a specialist in deep-sea geological research, she left NASA to accept the post of Chief Scientist at the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). She was a member of the Pew Oceans Commission from 2001-2003. Dr Sullivan also served as an oceanographer in the US Naval Reserve, rising to the rank of Captain.
Dr Sullivan is the recipient of many national honors and awards, including six NASA medals, for Space Flight, Exceptional Service and Outstanding Leadership. In 2003, she received the esteemed Public Service Award from the National Science Board, to which she was appointed as a member in 2004.
Dr Sullivan serves as a member of many Boards of Directors and advisory councils, including: the National Science Board; the American Association of the Advancement of Science; American Electric Power Inc.; Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institution; and Noblis.
She is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) as well as a Member of many professional associations in aerospace, earth sciences and education.
A graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz, she earned her PhD in Geology from Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, specializing in deep-sea research. She has received many honorary Doctorate of Science degrees.
