Hugh Carey has served two terms as Governor of the State of New York - he was elected the 51st Governor in 1974 and was re-elected in 1978.
As Governor, he was the architect of the financial plan that averted the bankruptcy of New York City and began a sweeping program of fiscal reform and economic development to restore the State's vitality. His extensive tax reduction program (in excess of $2.5 billion) was the keystone of restoring New York's competitive economy in the 1970s. Nationally, he was a spokesman for regional concerns and a proponent of comprehensive programs for urban and industrial revitalisation. He founded the Conference of Northeast Governors (CONEG).
In 1991, the Governor was the first Chairman of the National Institute of Former Governors, and was re-elected as Chairman through 1993. President Clinton appointed the Governor to the American Battle Monuments Commission in 1993.
In 1960, he was elected to the House of Representatives. He served on the Education and Labor Committee, the Interior Committee and the Ways and Means Committee.
During his seven terms in the US Congress, he became Deputy Whip and framed several pieces of landmark legislation on education, the rights of the disabled and revenue sharing.
He served with the Timberwolf Division of the 101st Cavalry of the New York National Guard during the Second World War, leading some of the first American troops across the Rhine, and effected the liberation of the Nordhausen concentration camp. He is a recipient of the Combat Infantry Award Bronze Star and the Croix de Guerre.
Governor Carey is a Senior Partner in the Law firm of Harris Beach LLP. He serves on the corporate boards of Triarc and China Trust.
He graduated from St. John's University and St. John's University Law School with the degree of Juris Doctor.
