On Wednesday May 15th UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School announced a new MSc in Business Analytics which will begin in September 2008. Business Analytics, also known as Management Science or Operations Research, uses quantitative techniques to facilitate decision-making and problem-solving in business.
By building partnerships with companies at the forefront of applying quantitative (IT, software and mathematical) techniques in business, UCD Smurfit School has developed a programme that is specifically tailored to the needs of industry and employers.
The company partnerships include company staff completing the programme part-time, company funded scholarships for students and students completing dissertations and projects on real life company problems. Affiliated companies are also invited to suggest relevant content for the course that would best fit their recruitment needs.
The new programme is suitable for candidates from a variety of disciplines who have an aptitude for maths,an interest in developing computer software and who want to build their technical and analytical knowledge and expertise.
Speaking at the programme launch, Professor Tom Begley, Dean UCD Business Schools said:
“We are delighted to announce the commencement of this new programme which will respond more directly to industry needs. As the leading business school in Ireland and in order to compete globally we need to stay in tune with what potential employers want from our graduates. Developing synergies and partnerships with industry is key to this. ”
Geraldine Lavin, President of the Institute of Business Analysis and Consulting (IBAC) welcomed the introduction of the new programme. “Through linkages with the programme team and our members, we look forward to contributing to the development of practical, current and relevant course content to meet the ever changing needs of organisations in today’s challenging business environment,” she says.
The Institute of Management Consultants and Advisors also welcomed the introduction of the new MSc programme. “The MSc in Business Analytics is an extremely useful initiative for making post-graduate courses in business more relevant to our members' needs and we look forward to supporting the UCD Smurfit Business School in the development of the programme," says Tom Moriarty, Development Executive, Institute of Management Consultants and Advisors.
“In our current competitive business environment, it is becoming increasingly important that managers make well informed decisions. This MSc programme offers the analytical skills required to do this and matches the graduate profile we wish to recruit,” says Paul Pierotti, Managing Consultant of PA Consulting Ireland.
The MSc Programme is included in the HEA Graduate Skills Conversion Programme, which is funded by the National Development Plan (NDP) of the Government of Ireland, which covers most of the fees on the course.
