UCD Smurfit School receives AMBA Reaccreditation

Senior Representatives from UCD Smurfit School recently attended the AMBA Reaccreditation - Annual Gala Dinner in London.

UCD Smurfit School is delighted to receive AMBA (Association of MBAs) re-accreditation.  AMBA is a UK-based organization established in 1967, that has the objectives of promoting Masters level business education and ensuring that the quality of Masters level business education is producing professional business leaders.

AMBA accreditation is focused exclusively on the MBA programme offered by an institution, rather than on the overall institution itself, although the institution is also examined.  In examining the institution, AMBA looks to ensure that there are “well defined and implemented policies of governance” and also that the business school can demonstrate “a discreet identity and have an appropriate degree of autonomy ( from the wider university) for decision making on issues such as strategic development and resourcing with respect to educational provision and management of educational resources”.  It also must be able to demonstrate that it has “an effective and integrated organization for the management of activities, with a significant degree of autonomy and control over its future”. 

AMBA accreditation is designed to assess an MBA programme against a set of criteria that has been established by its International Accreditation Advisory Board (IAAB).  These criteria cover the following areas:

• The Institution

• Faculty

• Students

• Purpose and Outcomes

• Curriculum

• Mode and Duration

The accreditation process involves a self-assessment by the institution against the AMBA guidelines, followed by an Assessment Visit from AMBA personnel, leading peer academics and possibly a corporate member.

UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School is one of only 25 schools in the world and is the only Irish School to hold the ‘triple crown’ of accreditation from the three centres of business and academic excellence –EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB.
