Designing Dublin is a project that aims to encourage positive social change within Dublin through design thinking. A team of students from the Marketing Development Programme at UCD Smurfit School recently spent three weeks collecting wishes for Dublin from different groups of citizens – children, teenagers, young adults, mature adults and pensioners. The team had conversations with over 1000 people, which resulted in capturing practical, imaginative, extraordinary and inspirational wishes.
The team members include: Barbara Carr, Don Donoghue, George Leonard, Aislinn Marron, JP O’Keeffe, Katrine Thordal-Christenson, Anna-Marie Tighe and Alan Zambra.
From the information collected, three themes of wishes were identified, which will be reviewed by the World Café discussion group over the coming months. The ideas from this group will be actualised in the month of October when the Designing Dublin team are joined by the Kaos Pilots from Aarhus, Denmark. Together they will implement a social initiative based on the ideas from the World Café.
The following is a sample of a few of the wishes:
"I wish we could clean Sandymount Beach." Booterstown N.S. Student, 10
"I wish that I knew my neighbours better and people shared and looked after each other like they used to." Peggy, 78
"I wish there was higher amplitude of open events and quality, street performances. To inspire minds, bring people together and share the breeze of the “Harp” culture. " Eduardas Gricius
“I wish that in Dublin, we could establish a level of identity – look at the city centre versus the suburbs, many people don’t have an identity, they say where they came from” Barretstown
'Design Twentyfirst Century' is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to the belief that Ireland can be a prosperous, innovative and happier country if we re-awaken and tap into the spirit of creativity and imagination that runs deep in our people and our history.
