Fundamental to good governance are directors who fully understand their roles and responsibilities. Two reports published in late 2009 have made significant recommendations concerning directors’ education and training needs. Recommendation 1 of the Walker Report requires directors to be provided with substantive, personalised training and development which should be discussed annually with the chairman. The FRC’s review echoed this recommendation, by requiring the chairman to review and agree a development plan with each director. Commenting on the publication of these reports, Prof Niamh Brennan, Academic Director of the Centre for Corporate Governance at UCD said ”The establishment of the Centre for Corporate Governance at UCD in 2002 recognised the importance of education and training of directors for effective boards.
The Centre provides a wide range of courses to meet these needs, including short mornings-only courses, customised courses for company boards and a one year part time Diploma in Corporate Governance.”
