Dublin, Wednesday 1st September 2010: UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School has launched the 2010 Business Journalist Awards today, in association with HP Ireland, to honour excellence in Irish business journalism across print, broadcast and online media.
Speaking at the launch of the 2010 Awards, Prof. Tom Begley, Dean UCD Business Schools said: “Business journalists play a pivotal role in Irish society. Their role in provoking discussion and holding leaders accountable is fundamental in building a strong and credible business community in Ireland. This year has seen many important business stories emerging, challenging journalists to explain often highly complex issues with clarity and insight. As sponsors of these awards for the fourth year running, we honour business reporting that enhances the understanding of business in Ireland.”

In total there are six categories in the Business Journalist Awards 2010; business news, business comment, business feature, specialist business reporting, business interview and young business journalist of the year. The categories will be open to all journalists throughout the island of Ireland and are open to print, broadcast and online media.
The judging panel is comprised of key industry figures from the world of business and journalism. Chairman of Gaisce – The President’s Award and “An Smaoineamh Mor – Your Country Your Call”, Laurence Crowley will chair this year’s judging panel. Judges include: Prof. Tom Begley, Dean of UCD Business Schools; Michael Carey, Executive Chairman Jacob Fruitfield Food Group; Vivienne Jupp, Chair of the Accenture Institute for Public Services Value; Tom McEnaney, media consultant and Irish financial journalist; David McRedmond, Chief Executive of TV3; Martin Murphy, Managing Director HP Ireland; Anne Nolan, Chief Executive of the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association; Rodney Rice, former RTE presenter and Prof. Bill Roche, Professor of Industrial Relations and Human Resources at UCD School of Business.
The closing date for entries is midday, Friday 1st October 2010. Entries can be submitted online at www.smurfitschool.ie/bja and the winner of each category will receive €1,000.
