Gerardine is a chartered accountant and lecturer in accounting at University College Dublin. Gerardine's research interest in health care management combines her science degree in pharmacology (UCD) with her qualification and experience as a chartered accountant with KPMG. Gerardine was the academic director of the Executive MBA (Health Care Management) programme (2005-2009) at the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School. As a consequence of her expertise in health care accounting and management, in June 2002 Gerardine was invited to provide assistance and advice to the Commission on Financial Management and Control Systems in the Health Services in the area of international best practice in regard to health service financial management systems, cost control and reporting arrangements. The Commission published its report in January 2003 acknowledging her input. In this regard Gerardine was invited to speak at the 2004 annual Biomedica Academy of Medical Laboratory Science conference on the recommendations and implications of the `Brennan' Report. Gerardine's expertise from practice and from her academic work is the financing and costing of health care. Gerardine has presented at both national and international academic and health industry conferences and has hosted international workshops on `Accounting and Health Care' at UCD. Gerardine has published in journals in Ireland and in the UK. Gerardine has supervised a PhD study entitled 'Performance Measurement of Acute-Care Hospitals in HSE South'; a European Union sponsored study. Gerardine is supervising a PhD study is in the area of health literacy (healthliteracy.ie) and in patient level costing and critcal care pathways. Gerardine has extensive experience of accounting and management in European health care systems as a consequence of being the scientist-in-charge of a research project funded by the European Commission for its duration 1998 to 2002 (Contract number FMRX-CT97-0152). In October 2006 Gerardine was awarded a three year tendered research project by the Health Information and Quality Authority (formerly the Irish Health Services Accreditation Board). The aim of the research project is to perform an analysis of the impact of the Acute Care Accreditation Scheme. A report was submitted to HIQA including a costing of the accreditation process. This research has been presented at the annual meeting of the International Society for Quality in Health Care in October 2008 and by HIQA at other international meetings. In March 2008, Gerardine secured funding for a four year PhD study in the area of health literacy with Merck Sharp and Dohme Ireland (Human Health) Limited. The study is part of the European Health Literacy Survey (Grant Number 2007113-HLS-EU) aimed at measuring health literacy in Ireland, performing comparative analyses with other European countries. The study also seeks to measure the economic implications of a given level of health literacy. Gerardine has chaired the judging panel of the Crystal Clear MSD Health Literacy Awards (healthliteracy.ie, crystalclearawards.ie) since 2008. Ministers for Health and Children have presented the awards. |
