| Dr. Bourke's teaching experience (design, delivery and assessment) is at undergraduate, graduate and executive education levels. She designs and delivers modules in the following areas: Research Methods (business, sport management, educational development), International Business (graduate and undergraduate); Corporate Strategy (graduate & distance learning programmes) and Services Management and Development (Undergraduate & Executive Education Programmes). In her role as Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning in the Business School, she contributes to the design and development of programme / module curriculum, participates in programme reviews, writes opinion pieces on educational policy matters and facilitates teaching and learning seminars for students and members of faculty. In promoting effective learning techniques among students, she encourages students to become aware of their learning styles and the factors that facilitate deep and lasting learning. She contributes to Business School Induction Programmes for students commencing their study (graduate or undergraduate) by way of short Teaching & Learning sessions. These brief sessions introduce undergraduate students to key aspects of university learning (the need for planning, focus, reflection, questioning etc.) so that they are prepared for the change in levels of learning and to ensure that they achieve their goals and ambitions (personal & professional). She also emphasises the importance that students become independent and self-directed learners. A slightly different focus is used for graduate students for whom the promotion of deep and reflective learning is primary. Graduate students are expected and encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and drawing on prior experience, contribute to the attainment of programme / module learning outcomes. Another role of Programme Induction is to familiarize all students with University procedures, regulations and policy. While Programme Induction sessions take place at the beginning of each academic year, several refresher sessions are organized at the request of programme personnel - these are mainly facilitated for mid year incoming Exchange or Study Abroad students. Dr. Bourke also designs and facilitates Business School Teaching & Learning Seminars / Workshops for Business School students and faculty (locally and overseas). The more recent workshop for students focused on efficient team work - entitled 'Making module teams work'. The workshop drew on participants' experiences in teams (sport, drama etc) with a view to assisting them identify the factors which drive effective teams. Dr. Bourke is Chair of the Business School T&L Committee and this forum provides suggestions for Faculty T&L Seminars. Over the years, Business School T&L seminars have covered the following topics: (a) Formulating Learning Outcomes, (b) Compiling a module outline, (c) Aligning Assessment with Learning Outcomes, (d) Writing formal examination papers and compiling mark sheets; (e) Designing and Grading Student Team Projects (f) The role of feedback in promoting student learning'; (g) Organizing and managing assessment of student team work (h) Small & Large Group Teaching - facing the challenges and (i) Designing, planning and facilitating Intensive Teaching or Block modules'. While the aims and outcomes for intensive modules are similar to those delivered using the traditional face to face (F2) format, attention needs to shirt to student supports (virtual and paper based) to ensure that the intended outcomes are attained. |
