Biography:

Research
Peter Mc Namara is a senior lecturer at University College Dublin. Peter's research lies at the intersection of strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship. He focuses on strategic issues relating to capturing financial value from innovation and R&D; business models in high talent settings, inter-organizational alliances; knowledge management, and the roots of temporary and sustainable competitive advantage. At present he is undertaking research in the industrial domains of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, professional sports and not-for-profit organizations.

He has twice won the UCD Business School Annual Outstanding Publication Award for his research and the Best Strategy Paper at the European Academy of Management. He has published his research in international academic peer reviewed journals such as Journal of Business Venturing, Research Policy, Long Range Planning and the British Journal of Management.

He is a Principal Investigator on the UCD PTRLI 'Innovation Policy Simulation for the SMART Economy (IPSE) funded by the Irish Government. His element of this collaborative project is focused on analysing the impact of R&D success and failure experience upon the performance of European and North American biotechnology and pharmaceutical firms in terms of changes to their innovation strategy, R&D task performance and firm financial performance.

Education
Peter received his PhD, specializing in Strategic Management, from Cass Business School, City University London. He also holds a Batchelor of Business Studies from University of Limerick (Ireland) and a Master of Business Studies from University College Dublin (UCD). He was made a Fellow of the Strategic Planning Society in 2011.

Teaching
He has lead strategy courses on a wide range of programmes including: short executive education courses; executive MBA and specialist masters; undergraduate and doctorial programmes. His teaching portfolio ranges from introductory strategy courses to intermediate courses on strategy formulation and implementation, through to advanced courses on the economics of strategy. He has taught strategy courses in a number of institutions and countries, including: the Smurfit Graduate School of Business, UCD (Ireland), Cass Business School, City University (London), Universite Pierre Mendes, France, University of Amsterdam, School of Real Estate, University of Friborg (Switzerland) and for UCD in Singapore, Hong Kong and Spain.

He is committed to infusing his teaching with the evidence based research insights. He is the author of a number of strategy and enterpreneurship teaching case studies. He is co-author of a case study on the Irish business format franchiser Abrakebabra, which won the 2007 European Case Award in Entrepreneurship, organized by the European Case Clearing House. He served a five year term as an Assistant Editor of Long Range Planning, one of the longest established peer review journals in the strategy domain.

Administration
Peter is currently the Director of the PhD program and also the Academic Director of the MSc Business at UCD Smurfit Graduate School of Business. The PhD program has approximately 80 students and the MSc Business has approximately 450 students across 10 streams. He is also an external examiner for the University of Kent, Canterbury Business School.

Research Interests

Thematic Focus of my Current Research:

Relationship between R&D decisions and activities upon firm performance. This work explores the relationship between R&D failure and success experience and both innovation strategy and task performance. I also explore the relationship between R&D experience, innovation strategy and financial performance.
The relationship between alliance formation, innovation capabilities and firm performance.
Business Models: creating and capturing value in talent war industries, specifically the role of heterogeneity of star talent and firm capabilities in both task and firm level performance.
Stakeholder Management: how do non-central stakeholders manage the process of acquiring resources and facilitate cooperation from stakeholders with divergent values and interests.
Management of theoretic tension between exploration and exploitation activities and their impact upon task and firm level innovation strategy and performance
Knowledge management activities; their internal organization and impact upon firm performance
Performance impacts of education careers and programs. This program includes research on the efficacy of strategy education using experimental designs, and the impact of initial conditions and career decisions upon the research performance of business school academics.

Empirical settings are primarily in the:

biotechnology,
professional sports and
not-for-profit sectors.

This stream of research has twice won the UCD Business School Outstanding Publication Award, and the Best Strategy Paper award from the European Academy of Management.

Case Studies

I am also committed to the translation of research into teach practice through writing teaching case studies on a range of strategy topics in a sectors such as biotechnology, domestic owned mid-sized corporations and not-for-profits. My case work has won the Best Entrepreneurship Case Study from the European Case Clearing House.

Internal seminar and workshop series organizer.

I founded and organized the internal brown bag strategy and later macro management workshop and seminar series within the Business School. Papers in all stages of development were presented and discussed within the seminars, from early stage ideas to pre-conference and between stages of the peer review journal submission process. This series took place over the academic years 2006 to 2008. Participants included faculty members and PhD students. These workshops also afforded the opportunity to discuss research funding issues.

My primary teaching area is strategic management. I have taught courses in Ireland, Europe and Asia. My portfolio of teaching courses has spanned:

* Contemporary Issues in Strategy research - specialist masters and PhD
