| Allen Higgins is a research associate
and lecturer in the Centre for Innovation, Technology and Organisation (CITO)
in the School of Business at University College Dublin. He is a doctoral
candidate at the University of Warwick under the supervision of Joe
Nandhakumar, holds a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering from the
University of Queensland, Australia, and a Master of Business Studies in
Electronic Commerce from the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, Ireland.
His studies are focused on processes of collaborative software design, accessed
ethnographically. His research interests include inter-organisational network
innovation and collaboration; taking a social/organisational perspective of the
development, implementation and maintenance of high tech systems. Master of Business Studies, University College Dublin, Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business. Thesis investigated "Changing control mechanisms in software development organizations utilizing XP". Student in the inaugural Ecommerce MBS programme at UCD in 1999. Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Computer Engineering), University of Queensland, Brisbane. Thesis on control and navigation of a semi-autonomous mobile robot. "The Hero as Macro-Mouse, Guidance and Navigation". Bachelor of Science, University of Queensland, Brisbane. Grounding in biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, invertebrate zoology. |
| My motivation for conducting detailed studies of the software development workplace arose through industry experience in software development, management, quality audit and quality systems in high tech IT firms. I was initially encouraged by developments surrounding novel practices to programming such as pair/peer programming, code review methods, standard coding techniques, cyclic delivery, iterative planning, developments in test techniques, architectural approaches, versioning strategies, task tracking, and document generation, to name a few. Subsequently my attention has shifted to the performance of work centered on intersubjective moment surrounding everyday programming work. The challenge is to provide meaningful analysis, theoretical treatment; considerations attending to notions of agency, collectivity and materiality focused on the management of soft work. Outcomes may suggest interpretations or interventions; actions aimed at altering enactments for betterment, emancipation, or improvement of circumstances associated with this workplace. General areas of interest: • Social and organizational perspectives of information systems; Use of content management systems in networks; Organisational adaptation to the adoption of key practices of agile methods within technology companies. Specific research topics/projects: • Practicing Standard Knowledge: Software standards and implications for managing programming as knowledge work. Participant observation workplace study focused on practices of programmers and others developing software according to open standards definitions and related institutional processes surrounding such initiatives. • Software Standards Discourse: Review of literature on standards in software and ICT infrastructure development. What prior assumptions are implicit and built into standards discourse; in particular notions of knowledge, work organisation and production. • Investigating loci of Service Innovation: Development of case studies of selected innovation experiences in the ICT and financial services industry. • e-Government/Industry Interaction: Improving trader contact with public administration. A series of short duration exploratory field studies of a trader's work environment when handling goods transactions for international shipments. |

| I am a member of the Centre for Innovation, Technology & Organisation (CITO). CITO is home to a multi-disciplinary research community that is broadly concerned with understanding the role played by information, knowledge and information and communication technologies (ICT) in organisational processes, both within and between business corporations and broader social institutions. More specifically, a key focus of the Centre's research activities is on understanding the dynamics of ICT-enabled organisational change, and on developing approaches and implications for the management of IS innovation. |
| Researchers at CITO (Centre for Innovation, Technology & Organisation) in the UCD School of Business secured EU research funding as part of an international consortium studying the development and use of inter-organisational information systems linking public administrations and business organisations. The ITAIDE Research Programme (Information Technology for Adoption and Intelligent Design of E-Government) is a multi year, multi-million euro Integrated Project funded by the European Commission Information Society and Media Directorate-General under the Sixth Framework Programme Information Society Technologies (IST). I am a member of the ISM Group at Warwick Business School. I have also taken part in research under the IKON group at Warwick Business School. |
| My teaching philosophy: Learning is (at least partially) a social construction manifest in interaction and developed over periods of reflection. My position is that true learning is both a personal and a collaborative process, my teaching therefore focuses on enabling learning through action, for example by collaboratively engaging in the acts of constructing artefacts (such as texts) for others to see or use. Principles and aspirations: My general goals in designing and delivering the modules I teach are informed by the aims of the UCD Business School articulated in the review proposal "Building on tradition and embracing the future" (2009). Each graduate should be able to "demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the historical, contemporary and emerging issues" relevant to the area. They should show they have developed their own understanding of the subject matter by considering what data or evidence is relevant, assessing the evidence, applying theory, critiquing, synthesising new understanding or theory if needed, judging approaches to application or use and then reassessing and reflecting on the process. Furthermore, I aim to emphasise opportunities to engage with society in areas impacted by the subject matter in order to contribute to the wider development and to also learn about current issues. Notes on current modules: MIS40690 is available as an elective for CEMS MIM students from 16/Jan to 12/May 2012 (link). See module information below. |
