Sources of Funding

The UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School offers a variety of funding schemes to Doctoral students. The following sources of funding are available.

Teaching Fellowships: The UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School may offer PhD Fellowships to suitable applicants who gain entry to the PhD programme and present evidence of an aptitude for teaching, tutoring and related duties. Fellowship holders will be awarded full fees remission and will be paid an annual stipend. 

Fee Remission: In your first year of study, you may apply for full or part remission of PhD fees. After that, the granting of fee remission will depend upon whether you have made satisfactory progress in your studies and research as judged by your supervisor and assessment panel.'

Conference and Field Work Allowance: In order to encourage and promote student participation at national and international academic conferences, and facilitate research work in the field, students are eligible to apply for an annual allowance of €900.

EDAMBA Allowance: Travel and subsistence costs for the EDAMBA (European Doctoral Programmes Association for Management & Business Administration) conference will also be covered for the successfully selected students.

Irish Students

Higher Education/Local Authority Grant scheme: Qualification is subject to means, age, academic attainment and residence. Contact your local authority for more information.

Student loans: If you are applying for a student loan, the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School has agreed student loan rates with AIB and Bank of Ireland.

Mature Student Grant scheme: You may qualify if you are over 23 years of age and live independently of your parents’ home. Contact your local authority for more information.

Tax relief: If you are self-funding, you can apply to the Revenue Commissioners for tax relief on your tuition fees. Contact the Helpline for PAYE enquiries on 1890 605 090, and ask for the ‘Tax Relief for Tuition Fees’ brochure. 

Students from the UK

You can apply for a Career Development Loan from the Department of Education and Skills.

Students from the US and Canada

You may be eligible for a US Federal Loan from the Department of Education or you can take out a private education loan from a bank in the US. . To obtain information about Federal Loans please see http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Canadian students can apply for a loan from the Canadian Student Loan Program. For further information, you can visit canlearn.ca or take out a private loan from the Canadian Higher Education Loan Program. Application forms are available from www.iefc.com and www.internationalstudentloan.com


Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) ( http://www.irchss.ie/ ) funds cutting-edge research in the humanities, social sciences, business and law with the objective of creating new knowledge and expertise beneficial to Ireland's economic, social and cultural development.
 

Universities Ireland ( www.universitiesireland.ie ) promotes collaboration between universities in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. They usually offer a number of bursaries to students undertaking a recognised Master's course (taught or research) in the other Irish jurisdiction.

Other Funding Sources

Funding may also be available through research grants to supervisors form the Higher Education Authority’s Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (HEA-PRTLI).

Likewise, funding may also be available through research programmes funded by the European Commission.

Students from North America can avail of loans under FFELP and private loan programmes such as ISLP and CanHelp.
