Alltech is one of the top 10 largest animal health companies globally. The company has turnover in excess of $1 billion and operates in 182 countries. In conjunction with UCD Smurfit School, Alltech developed a tailored mini-MBA training programme for the company’s senior executives, which has now been running for more than a decade. The need arose in 1999 when Alltech management identified a difficulty in accessing the right quality and quantity of people of MBA standard to join their company as the agribusiness sector was not attractive to them.

Aidan Connolly from Alltech discusses Alltech’s Mini MBA

The Alltech mini-MBA was developed in 2000 and is instrumental in communicating the culture of Alltech and refining the company’s focus and global strategy. The programme consists of four main modules: strategy, branding, leadership & coaching and strategy innovation & implementation, all supported by four intensive specialist agribusiness modules. Each module is taught through a combination of lectures, group and individual assignments and case studies. The modules take place in Dublin in August and annual refresher courses are held in Lexington, USA in advance of Alltech’s International Symposium. Over 100 employees from around the world attend the programme annually.

The Alltech programme presented several challenges to UCD Smurfit School. As a global leader in animal health technology, many of Alltech’s employees have PhDs and advanced degrees from leading universities around the world. In addition, as a global organisation many of its employees speak English as a second language. Thirdly, Alltech required a programme primarily focused on the agribusiness sector whilst recognising the value of examining other industries in contrast.

UCD Smurfit School’s solution was to position the programme at a sufficiently high intellectual standard to engage those with advanced qualifications while at the same time ensuring that they secured the fundamental principles of strategy and management. UCD’s faculty, many of whom speak second languages, were a good match to Alltech’s global audience. In the general absence of suitable material on Alltech’s industry, the company and university works in partnership to develop original material including cases and exercises related to Alltech itself, its customers, competitors and industry.
