Participants’ Profile - Class of 2004-05

George Appleton

George is Managing Director of SIG Ireland, a subsidiary of SIG plc. SIG Ireland is a group of construction related companies. Prior to joining SIG, George was Group Managing Director of Roskel pls, a specialist distributor of construction products. George holds a BA from North Staffordshire University.

David Casey

David is a non-executive director of the Irish subsidiaries of Macquarie Bank Australia and a number of funds management companies. He is also an independent consultant. A chartered accountant, David has worked for AIB Group and KPMG and is a Business Studies graduate of TCD.

 

Emer Daly

Emer is the Director of Strategic Planning and Risk Management at AXA Insurance and a non-executive director of Eirgrid plc. Prior to joining AXA, Emer worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Emer is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and also holds a BA in Economics from UCD.


Dermod Dwyer

Dermod is a graduate of Harvard University, with an extensive international career at the nexus of the public and private sectors. He currently acts, in executive and non executive capacities, for TTC International, Spencer Dock Development Company, Treasury Holdings, Setanta Media, Ritz-Carlton Hotel and for a number of other private and voluntary organisations.


Carmel Gartland

Carmel joined Shopdirect in the UK in 1973 and moved back to Dublin to set up the Irish operation in 1978. She was appointed Customer Services Director in 2002. Carmel is currently involved in a number of projects at strategic level, one of which is the organisation’s biggest venture within the European operation.


Caroline Gill

Caroline was appointed Deputy Financial Services Ombudsman in May 2005. Previous to this, she held the position of Insurance Ombudsman and was also Chief Executive of the Consumers Association of Ireland. Caroline is a qualified barrister and also holds a BA and an MSc.


Jerry Kelly

Jerry is Principal of Strategic Options Ltd., management consultants which he founded in 1992. He has previously held management positions with C&C Group, Guinness, IDA-Ireland, R&H Hall/IAWS. He is the Chairman of Seek Technology Ltd., and Forage Systems Ltd., Vice-Chairman of the Royal Hospital, Donnybrook and a Director of Oasis Crescent Global Investment Fund (Irl) plc.


Tom Kelly

Tom, LIB has 30 years banking experience in diverse locations and markets. He is a director of CIBC World Markets Securities Ireland Ltd., and was formerly CECO of Anglo Irish Bank (IOM) Plc


Liam Marnane

Liam is a non-executive director of Our Ladys Children's Hospital, Crumlin and works as a mentor to several small businesses. He enjoyed a thirty year career with Cadbury Schweppes where he held many senior management roles - retiring recently from the role of Managing Director. Liam holds a BComm and an MBS in Marketing from UCD.


James Martin

Jimmy is currently an Assistant Secretary in the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform with responsibilities for Prisons policy, Garda accountability and Corporate Governance. He is a member of the board of the Courts Service, NDA and the Irish Prison Service. Jimmy holds a BL from Kings Inns.


Maurice Murphy

Maurice is a Chartered Accountant with twenty years experience in an accountancy practice. He is currently a director and trustee of a hotel company. Maurice also lectures in corporate finance to masters and professional accountancy students. He holds an LLM from UCD.


Alan McDonnell

Alan's career has spanned the retailing, banking and technology sectors in senior marketing roles. He founded Empeira Business Advisors specialising in corporate strategy and governance. Alan is a member of the IoD, the European Corporate Governance Institute and a Fellow and former Chairman of the Marketing Institute.


Bill MacLysaght

Bill is Chairman of the State Fisheries Board. He worked as a Landscape architect with Shannon Development Co., Horticultural and Sylviculture consultant. Bill is Non-Executive Director of three private companies, and five voluntary organisations. He holds a BBS from UCD.


Sean McNamara

Seán is the Managing Director of FileNet Shared Services Centre Ireland Ltd. FileNet is a leading software vendor of Enterprise Content Management and Business Process Management software solutions to Fortune 500 companies. Prior to joining FileNet, Seán worked at Microsoft Ireland. Sean holds a BA (UCC) and an MBS and MBA from UCD.


Donnchadh O’Madagain

Donnchadh is currently Group Financial Controller with RTÉ, which he joined in 2002. Prior to that Donnchadh worked with the Adare Group as Group Financial Controller and with AIB Group in their Corporate Banking, Financial Control and Branch Banking areas. Donnchadh holds a BA from DCU and is a Chartered Accountant.


Tom Quinn

Tom's career spans over 30 years with RTE, where he is currently Group Secretary. He also sits on a number of RTE subsidiary boards. He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Tom holds a BA from UCD and a BL from Kings' Inns.


Paul Reynolds

Paul has been Finance Director of AMT-Sybex since 1990, a private company providing Consultancy and Software services mainly to Utility and Infrastructure companies. Paul has prior experience of running his own Accountancy practice and also working for a quoted Irish IT company. Paul holds a BComm from UCD and is a Chartered Accountant.


Werner Schwanberg

Werner was educated in Germany and has a career in international banking, most recently as Managing Director of Dresdner Bank (Ireland) plc. He is currently a Management and Financial Consultant and Managing Director of AGV Irish Leasing Ltd. In 2004, Werner was the recipient of the “Cross of the Order of Merit” of the German Federal Republic.


Bryan Sheane

Bryan is self-employed. He has chaired boards and committees at national level in both the agriculture and tourism industries. Bryan completed an MBA in UCD in 2003 and is currently involved in the evaluation of potential business opportunities in Ireland and internationally.


Fergus Sheridan

Fergus, a Chartered Management Accountant, is Managing Director of Strategic Risk Management Ltd; advising corporate, institutional and public sector clients on policy and control since 1994. He previously spent over 20 years developing and managing treasury, fund management and trading entities. He is a director of major hedge funds and other financial sector bodies.


Phil Shovlin

Phil is a Registered General Nurse and Midwife with extensive experience in the health service. Currently, Phil is Corporate Planner with the North West Health Services Executive. Prior to this, she was the CEO of St. Vincents Private Hospital and also the National Liver Transplant Co-ordinator.


John Smyth

John is Chairman of Empeira Corporate Governance Advisors and a Council Member and former President of the Institute of Directors in Ireland. John's career has mainly been in financial services and he was formerly Group Chief Executive Officer of First National Building Society. He is a Non-Executive Director of various companies.


Enda Twomey

Enda is the Deputy CEO of the Irish Bankers' Federation and previously
worked in the NTMA. He is a Solicitor and a member of the Company Law Review Group and the Banking and Treasury Committee of the Department of the Taoiseach. Enda holds a BCL from UCC and an MBS from UCD.


Patrick Wall

Patrick is adjunct Professor of Food Safety in the Centre for Food Safety, and is the Medical Epidemiologist in the Geary Institute, UCD. He is a Non-executive director of IAWS Plc. Patrick holds an MVB and MBA from UCD and an MBBAOBCH from RCSI.


Adr ian Waters

Adrian is the Principal of Fund Governance Solutions, where he specialises in providing directorship services to the financial services sector. He is also the founder and Chief Executive of teetimes.ie, Ireland's first online golf reservation network. He was formerly the Chief Executive of BISYS Europe. Adrian holds a BComm from UCD and is a chartered accountant.


Paul White

Paul is Managing Director of Sharptext Ltd, Irelands largest computer products distributor and Executive Director of Sercom Distribution, the IT Division of DCC Plc. Paul is also on the board of Gem Distribution (UK), Distrilogie (France), and the Pilton Group (Irl).
