Biography

Bill Roche is Full Professor of Industrial Relations and Human Resources at the School of Business, University College Dublin and Honorary Professor at the School of Management, Queen's University Belfast. He is a graduate of UCD and completed his doctorate at the University of Oxford, where he was Heyworth Memorial Prize Research Fellow of Nuffield College. He has written and edited 10 books and published in excess of 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. He was Subject Area Head for Human Resource Management and Employment Relations in the School of Business from 2004 to 2017. He has held visiting professorships at the University of South Australia, Adelaide, the University of Melbourne and the Cyprus International Institute of Management. He was a Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute, Florence. He is a member of the editorial boards of leading journals, including The British Journal of Industrial Relations; Industrial Relations; Human Resource Management Journal and Labour and Industry. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, where he chairs the judging panel for the HR Excellence Award and is a member of the CIPD Quality Advisory Group. He is a member of international advisory panels for research programmes and centres at the Manchester Alliance Business School and at the ADAPT Programme of the University of Bergamo. He serves as a member of the Faculty Promotions Committee at UCD. He is a member of the Council of the Irish Academy of Management and chair of the IAM's Work, Employment and Organization subject interest group. He has acted as External Examiner for Cardiff Business School and the University of Ulster. He was the first Dean of the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, where he was also Director of Research, Head of the doctoral programme, and developed the School's first structured PhD. He has published extensively in the world's leading international peer-reviewed journals in his field. He has led or contributed to strategic planning and reviews undertaken by such bodies as the Workplace Relations Commission, the Labour Relations Commission, The National Economic and Social Council, the National Centre for Partnership and Performance, the Health Service Executive and IBEC. He has served on the Councils of the Economic and Social Research Institute and of the National Centre for Partnership and Performance and on numerous boards inside and outside UCD.  He is a regular contributor to TV, radio and newspaper coverage of human resource and employment relations themes and regularly contributes to professional conferences and seminars on developments in HR and employment relations. In 2010 he was elected to a Fellowship by the Irish Academy of Management (the highest award the Academy can confer on a member) in recognition of his work as a teacher and researcher.
