UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School and KPMG are delighted to invite applications for the inaugural Denis O’Connor KPMG Doctoral Scholarship in Accounting, commencing in September 2009.
Generously and kindly endowed by KPMG, this Scholarship celebrates the achievement and leadership of the late Denis O’Connor, former Managing Partner of KPMG in Ireland. It recognises his work as one of the leading accounting professionals of his generation until his untimely death in 2006 at the age of 46. In his memory, the Scholarship will contribute substantively to building the next generation of accounting educators and professionals in Ireland.
In memory of Denis O’Connor, the Scholarship will
i) contribute to sustaining, renewing and to the development of professional accounting educators in Ireland
ii) respond to the many changes taking place in accounting education and in the accounting profession more generally and, hence,
iii) enhance the position of the accounting profession in Ireland and internationally.
The award will support on an ongoing basis a doctoral scholarship in accounting at UCD.
The Scholarship will be offered on a four-yearly basis and will be awarded through open competition.
Applications will be evaluated and ranked according to the following criteria:
(a) Academic excellence and potential of the candidate;
(b) Originality and potential of the research proposed;
(c) Potential contribution to or 'fit' with the UCD Accountancy Subject Area’s research programme or expertise (for further details, see http://www.ucd.ie/quinn/aboutus/ouracademics/accountancy/);
(d) Testament of referees;
(e) Prior experience and formation in Accounting. In addition to academic excellence and potential, cognisance will be taken of prior professional and business experience that may further indicate the applicant's future potential as a researcher.
Applicants must complete an application form with supporting documentation. This will include a 1,000 word research proposal. Proposals will be evaluated inter alia on the basis of their originality and potential.
In advance of application, applicants are advised to familiarise themselves with the research interests of the members of the UCD Accountancy Subject area (available at http://www.ucd.ie/quinn/aboutus/ouracademics/accountancy/) and, as appropriate, to consult Accountancy faculty to discuss their research interests and potential areas for Ph.D. research.
