What is the course about?

Now 40 years old - the first intake was in 1971 - the MSc in Finance at UCD Smurfit School was the first and still is the premier finance masters programme in Ireland. This programme combines specialist knowledge and a practical understanding of finance with research into the financial services industry. It focuses, in particular, on corporate finance and the investment markets.

Objectives

The MSc in Finance aims to advance your understanding of finance theory and practice and its relevance in the marketplace. It encourages you to develop creative and analytical approaches to problem-solving and to enhance your interpersonal and leadership skills.

What will I learn?

You will acquire a strong understanding of financial processes and procedures and develop the knowledge and skills (both professional and personal) necessary for a career in finance.

After completing the MSc in Finance you will have:

  • A comprehensive understanding of firms' financial management decisions in the context of how they contribute to maximising shareholder and stakeholder value.
  • A critical awareness of the operation and functions of international financial markets; of the various securities and their pricing; and of the wide range of risk management tools and strategies.
  • An enhanced knowledge of the principles of portfolio management.
  • A critical awareness of the risk-return trade-off and its importance in assessing investments, risk management and firms' financial decisions.
  • An applied knowledge of modern econometric methods.

Furthermore this programme will enable you to:

  • Critique and evaluate theoretical and empirical research in finance and effectively apply its findings where appropriate.
  • Analyse the management and strategic contexts in which financial decision-making takes place.
  • Describe and evaluate how global economic, regulatory and political factors affect the environment in which financial markets and institutions operate.
  • Analyse, synthesise and evaluate the impact of internationalisation on financial markets, institutions, instruments and the financial services industry.
  • Work effectively in teams.
  • Develop the capacity for completing independent research.
  • Enhance interpersonal and communication skills, including making presentations and preparing reports.
  • Develop an enthusiasm for life-long learning.

How will I benefit?

You will develop a comprehensive understanding of financial theory and a mastery of econometrics, which are highly valued by employers in the financial services sector.
