The PDW Workshop is designed to stimulate interactive discussion and help participants identify emerging research opportunities and spark dialogue that can advance research on the interplay of competition and cooperation. At the beginning of the workshop, one of the co-organizer will start the PDW by briefly illustrating the state of the art of the literature on the interplay of competition and cooperation and the importance and relevance of this topic in the age of radical technological changes. Then, she will leave the floor to the distinguished panelists. Each presenter will briefly highlight his or her own perspective on the topic, referring to relevant research and identifying important insights and open issues for future research.

The themes will cover coopetitive dynamics between incumbents and entrants and business model development in the aftermath of technological discontinuities, competitive tensions and cooperative motivations for shaping, firms’ interactions and ecosystem-level outcomes in high tech contexts, value creation and value approriation consideration for the interplay of comeptiiton and cooperation, learning by buying and supplying and sharing knowledge, and strategies for managing a portfolio of alliances to face radical technological changes.

Next, the main part of the PDW will be organized as a theme-based round table discussion. Interested participants will submit extended abstracts for consideration. Based on these abstracts, the organizers will -select 24 papers for including in the PDW. The selected papers will be assigned based on participants’ preferences to 5 roundtables, each led by one of the panelists. Accordingly, each panelist will be in charge of managing the roundtable discussions, in which participants will briefly present their papers and the panelists as well as the other participants, provide valuable feedback and suggestions for improvement. The panelists will be asked to facilitate a conversation around the common theme of the papers assigned to their group. The goal of this part of the PDW is to discuss ongoing research that can offer fresh perspectives on questions and issues concerning the interfaces between competition and cooperation. This will be done in particular by disentangling the areas where sound theoretical and impactful empirical contributions can be made.

A plenary discussion of the key issues that emerge in each roundtable will follow the parallel roundtable conversations. Each roundtable will designate a “table speaker” who shall report the conclusions of the discussion in her roundtable. Finally, one of the co-organizers will summarize the outcomes of the discussions. He will present a set of concluding remarks that can shape the PDW’s research agenda.
