Is It Time to Get Rid of The IT Department?
- Date: Thursday, February 23, 2023
- Time: 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
- Venue: UCD Smurfit Executive Development
- Location: UCD Smurfit School, Carysfort Avenue, Blackrock, Co. Dublin
The “IT department” has been part of the vocabulary of management ever since computers first entered organizations. While the label attached to this organizational unit frequently changes, it seems to be widely accepted that companies need some sort of organizational unit dedicated to managing IT. Indeed, in today’s digital economy, having an IT department just seems obvious. Professor Joe Peppard’s research suggests otherwise. While counter intuitive, his research indicates that IT departments are actually holding organizations back in achieving their digital transformation ambitions.
At this Smurfit Executive Development event, Professor Peppard will share his latest findings, challenging the fundamental assumptions and practices that frame our thinking about how companies design, position, structure and govern their IT units. Drawing on in-depth case studies, he will illustrate how pioneering companies are implementing new organizing models, and highlight what these mean for technology leadership in organizations. The bottom line: organizations need IT; but they almost certainly don’t need an IT department.
This event will conclude with a canapés & drinks reception, great networking opportunities and a chance to connect and reconnect with faculty and friends at UCD Smurfit School.

About Prof. Joe Peppard
Professor Joe Peppard is Academic Director at UCD Smurfit Executive Development. Previously, he was a faculty member at MIT Sloan School of Management, ESMT Berlin, and at Cranfield School of Management, UK. A leading authority on digital transformation, his research studies contemporary issues and challenges that managers face in an environment of accelerating technological change. While academically rigorous, with his research he seeks to steer a pragmatic path. He recognises that managers want frameworks and models to help them understand their own predicaments, insights to figure out options and consequences, and clear actionable advice and guidance. In his writings and teaching, Professor Peppard seeks to help the busy manager to be successful. Last year, The Wall Street Journal cited his research on digital transformation as one of “10 tech events that will shape the future.”
