UCD Centre for Business and Society (CeBaS) Seminar
Writing and teaching new histories of management to rethink the relationship between business and society.

Associate Professor Todd Bridgman, School of Management, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

Histories of the foundations of management studies, as presented to students in textbooks, help in constructing the boundary of our field – what counts as knowledge of management and organisation, and what lies beyond the boundary. In this seminar, I make the case for how existing histories, as presented in best-selling textbooks, create an unhelpfully narrow boundary. Drawing on examples of how foundational ideas are treated in textbooks, as well as examining ideas that are typically excluded, I highlight possibilities for creating new and different histories which can expand the scope of what is considered knowledge about management and stimulate innovative thinking about the role of business in society today.

Todd Bridgman is Associate Professor in the School of Management, Victoria University of Wellington and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Management Learning. His research interests lie at the intersection of management education, the history of management ideas and critical management studies. Todd co-authored A New History of Management (Cambridge University Press, 2017) and co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Critical Management Studies(2009). He has recently won Best Paper prizes in Human Relations and Academy of Management Learning & Education.
