Paula has been a lecturer in UCD since 2003. Her background is in electrical engineering (Kevin St., DIT, 1986).

She has an MSc in Computer Science (DCU, 1996). The topic of her dissertation was Heuristic Techniques (Simulated Annealing and Genetic Algorithms) for routing in Telecommunications Networks.

Paula also has a Masters in Management Science from the Smurfit School of Business (UCD, 2005). The topic of this dissertation was the Polyhedral Approach to Telecommunications Networks Design Problems.

Paula's PhD was in the field of Combinatorial Optimisation. Her thesis was titled "The Ring Spur Assignment Problem".

Paula has considerable experience in both academia and industry. Prior to joining UCD she worked as a Software Developer with the ESB (Ireland's semi-state electricity company), in Quality Assurance with DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) and in Business Planning and Management (an MIS role) with eircom (Ireland's former incumbent telco). She has also lectured in DCU.
Paula was academic director of the Bachelor of Commerce (International) programme from 2013 - 2017.

Research Interests

My research interests are in the application of Business Analytics and Operations Research techniques to solve real world business problems. This involves creating mathematical models of business problems, applying combinatorial optimisation techniques to solve the models, and interpreting the solutions as a set of decision recommendations. It may also involve the use of statistical and machine learning models. You'll find a short video about my research interests here.

I am a member of ENOG, the European Network Optimisation Working Group of EURO. EURO is the Association of European Operational research Societies.

I am a member of the UCD Energy Institute. I focusing on optimisation problems that arise in energy systems integration.

I am also interested in aspects of analytics applied to education, particularly in the development of quantitative skills for business students. I've shared some short videos for business statistics students who use the New Cambridge Statistical Tables here.
