Teaching is about developing students and helping them to grow. In particular, I want to develop critical thinking. This growth is best achieved by inspiring the students to engage with the material and to exchange learning with each other: the best way to learn something is to teach
Enhancement of Teaching
I teach mainly quantitative, algorithmic and/or information technology (IT) content in the area of analytics. This requires significant practical content, which I make an integral part of the module: demonstrations and tutorials as well as formal lectures; and practical assessment approaches, including programming assignments. These additional components significantly increase the preparation requirements for these modules; however, from engaging with students and seeking their feedback, I know they enhance student learning. The rapidly changing nature of analytics and IT means that course content must be constantly updated: I continually introduce new material, informed by my awareness of research developments and innovations in technology and applications. I integrate my own research, and findings of recent dissertations I have supervised. As a typical assignment, a team of two students must present to the class on a given academic paper. They not only explain the technical content, but evaluate the paper critically, approaching it from the following angles: - what is its context (or: topic, motivation) - did the authors find a gap (point of departure, "what next?") - what is their question (research aim) - what did they do (method(ology), research approach) - what did they find (results) - what is the answer (analysis, discussion) - what is the significance ("so what?", conclusion, value add) - did the paper succeed? In my view, this case study approach, though less common in technical areas, greatly enhances the students' active learning, independence and critical thinking.
Review and Enhancement of Curriculum
I have designed and developed at both programme and module level: - MSc Business Analytics (new programme, 2007-08); - an integrated set of courses for Mathematical Studies students: Algebraic Studies I, Algebraic Studies II, and Linear Algebra; - MMangtSc and MSc(Quantitative Finance): Quantitative Methods and Software and Numerical Applications (shared), decoupling the mathematical and algorithmic content; Networks and Algorithms (MMangtSc alone); - MSc Business Analytics: MIS40530 Numerical Methods and Software, MIS40550 Network Software Modelling, and MIS40750 Producing the Dissertation. - BComm, BAFS: new MIS30040 Decision Modelling (now Analytics Modelling); now a core module for Bachelor of Actuarial and Financial Science, illustrating its utility. I update all my modules continually, to reflect trends and student input. Structure and content are driven by learning outcomes, which in turn reflect academic rigour and industry needs. Module learning outcomes are a mix of knowledge-based and practical. Assessments reflect these, e.g., programming assignments for pricing financial instruments where student teams work from theory to implement mathematical and computational solutions; thus, they work through all phases of a real world exercise and learn by doing. Critical reading of current research papers helps students to develop independent thinking. I advised the implementation committee on BComm/BCommIntl/BBLS restructuring, headed by Prof Andrea Prothero, on quantitative content. I made the case that quantitative subjects are less suited to teaching in short fat modules; rather, understanding develops with time, practice and exercises; and that there should be a more quantitative route through the BComm and other undergrad business degrees for more mathematically able students. I lead the MIS Subject Area working group on redesign and updating of Analytics and other quantitative undergraduate MIS modules, better to align these subjects with the 1st year subjects arising from the BComm restructuring, and with entry requirements for the MSc Business Analytics.
Developing as a Teacher
To support colleagues, I review their teaching and assessment materials. At EURO conferences I attend the Education workshops. I incorporate applicable material into my teaching. For example, "Mind the gap: modelling learning in a professional curriculum" (Smedley, 2010) was relevant, covering assurance of accessibility, packaging information appropriately to engage with a wider range of learners: the MSc Business Analytics has students from backgrounds as diverse as Business and Physics, so for each topic I develop multiple "hooks" allowing each student to link it to his/her own background and better engage with the topic. With colleagues in EURO I work on developing teaching approaches informed by our experiences, such as web-based simulations and supplementing use of modelling and solver packages with spreadsheet based approaches; these latter are found to be more intuitive for beginning students. With Bjarni Kristjansson and others, I proposed the EURO Working Group on OR Education (EUROED), during the EUROXXIV conference, 12-14 July 2010. I worked with Mícheál Ó'hÉigeartaigh (WIT), Seamas Gallen (EI) and others in 2006-07 to develop an annual Irish Computational PhD summer school. We in the EURO Council are currently developing a policy document for Europe-wide PhD Schools on the OR/MS theme.
Innovation & Leadership
I led the redesign of the M.Mangt.Sc to the MSc Business Analytics, with new and revamped modules and a new ethos of engagement with industry sponsors: minor theses are on real-world problems, in partnership with industry sponsors. I use software in class to show algorithms in action: I share these approaches with colleagues. I developed a new module, MIS40750, "Producing the Dissertation", covering programming; planning and implementing an academically rigorous research project, and documenting the research as a minor thesis.
