The MBA Journey

Foundation Week

Foundation Week is held in the last week in August, and prepares students for the UCD MBA by providing an introduction to the core modules such as Finance, Financial Reporting, Marketing, Strategy and Leadership. In parallel, students will develop new skills such as case study analysis and report writing, be exposed to team dynamics through team building and business simulations, and communications workshops. All Full-Time MBA and Executive MBA Year 1 students are required to attend.

Global Network Week

UCD Smurfit School is a member of the Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM), which comprises 29 leading business schools from diverse regions, countries, cultures and economies in different phases of development. Global Network Week gives UCD MBA students and faculty the opportunity to pursue intensive study at another network school, in a focused mini course that leverages the perspectives, programs, and faculty expertise of that school. Alongside their counterparts from elsewhere in the network, students attend classes, tour local businesses, and meet with experts focused on current business problems.

Global Virtual Teams

Global Virtual Teams (GVT) is delivered in two parts. The first section is delivered as part of the Leadership and Organisational Behaviour module where UCD students collaborate virtually with students from partner schools.

Semester 1 Exams

Semester 1 exams are held in December. Please see this link for assessment dates.

Semester 2 kick off

Global Virtual Teams - prior to the start of the academic term the students attend an online workshop pertaining to virtual teams.

Global Virtual Teams

The simulation segment of the Global Virtual Teams (GVT) is delivered in the Operations and Supply Chain Management module. UCD students work in virtual teams with students from partner business schools to run a business in real time, solving real world business problems.

International study tour (Doing Business in International Markets)

MBA candidates participate in a one-week International Study Tour as part of the Doing Business in International Markets core module. The tour combines a variety of visits to high-profile companies, presentations and panel discussions from leading executives, government officials and entrepreneurs. Key themes are developed for each destination, creating a unique environment in which to learn about the country’s business and cultural landscape. Previous Study Tour destinations have included China, South Africa, India, UAE, Brazil, Japan and Korea.

MBA World Rugby World Cup

Each year, the Smurfit MBA Rugby Club team travels to Danville, Virginia to take part in the MBA Rugby World Cup – playing against teams from North American and European international business schools. In 2016, the men’s team reached the semi-finals, losing their match against Wharton, while the ladies’ team reached the final, coming runners up to London Business School.

Yale Integrated Leadership Case Competition

The Yale School of Management Integrated Case Competition (ILCC) is an opportunity for Smurfit Full-Time MBA students to compete against other international business schools in developing creative solutions to tackle a raw case study, taking into account different vantage points (finance, marketing, ethics, etc) and multiple stakeholders (customers, investors, employees, etc) when formulating a strategy and presenting their solution to a panel of esteemed judges representing the Yale faculty, sponsors and corporate leaders.

Semester 2 Exams

Semester 2 exams will be held during May. Please visit this link for assessment dates.

International Consultancy Project (Iceland)

The International Consultancy Project provides students with the opportunity to learn via real world projects, gain international cross-cultural experience, apply MBA learning and work as a team.

In June 2017, MBA students travelled to Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital and largest city and at the heart of its economic growth. For one week, student groups worked closely with local companies on real life assignments, identifying and presenting opportunities, efficiencies and innovations.

Capstone Project

An integral component of the MBA programme is the Capstone consulting project which is completed over a 6-week period in the summer semester. This project blends all of the learning of the MBA at the final stages of the academic year. MBA students work with companies to address real life strategic or operational issues for a company. It is also an invaluable opportunity for students to gain experience in sectors that they may not have previously worked.
