Welcome to Ireland Orientation - aimed at international students in the Smurfit School who are new to Ireland.  Please note that in addition to this Orientation session there will also be UCD Global Orientation activities held on Belfield Campus for all UCD students.  UCD Global events can be attended at your discretion (if they do not clash with your UCD Smurfit activities which take priority).

Professional Development Workshop - you will meet our Smurfit Career Development team, learn about how to use cutting-edge technology for your job search and how to enhance your own employability. You will also get valuable first-hand career insights from our recent alumni.

Attendance at your orientation event is mandatory.

UCD Smurfit Registration:

Before you begin the academic year at UCD, you will need to formally confirm your registration (via you SISWeb account).  This allows you to access module selection, obtain your UCD Student Card (UCARD) and gain access to the wide range of facilities available to our students.   Registration is done online and involves the following steps:

  • STEP 1 Personal Information
This is where you confirm your personal details, complete a survey, upload your photo for your UCARD and pay your fees.
  • STEP 2 Module Selection
Record your module choices - Core and Option modules (if required depending on the programme).

Registration normally commences in early August, just before the  your course starts.  More detailed information about registration and what you need to do will be shared here from July 2026.

Information on fees payment deadlines, instalments, EU fees eligibility and how to pay please visit the following links:

UCD’s student card is called UCard.

As well as being your student identification, you can use the UCard for photocopying and printing services, as well as accessing the campus building outside of normal opening hours e.g. at weekends.  If you are staying in on campus accommodation, you will need a UCard to access your accommodation.

UCD Smurfit School students will receive their student card during orientation in the Smurfit School.

Students staying on campus will receive their UCard when they check-in for their accommodation.

Make sure you have uploaded a photo in your SISWeb, so a UCard can be printed for you!

The academic calendar is published on the UCD website and can be found here: Key Academic Dates

Please note, some Smurfit Programmes  start earlier than the UCD official term dates. This is outlined in your offer letter and available in the Orientation Section of this website.

If you have questions about your orientation / start of term date, please contact us via UCD Smurfit Offer and Accept Holders Information Connector.

Accommodation

Please be aware that Ireland is currently experiencing a housing crisis and securing off campus accommodation is challenging. Our advice is to arrive in Ireland early - late July or early August at the latest. Our advice is also not to transfer any money unless you view the property in person (relevant for residential properties: houses and apartments).

To listen to our students speaking of their experiences searching for on-campus and off-campus accommodation, please tune in to stories from Ellen, Yingying, Hajeong Kim,  Aoife,  Archit, Inês and Josya
Watch Accommodation Information webinar recording by UCD Smurfit School from last April 2025 here.

Please find further information and advice below regarding on-campus and off-campus accommodation.

Visit UCD Accommodation Pad for advice on off campus housing.

If you are interested in on-campus accommodation and have not received an accommodation offer, please contact UCD Residences at residenceroombooking@ucd.ie (quote your UCD student ID/student number or the UCD applicant ID). Rooms are subject to availability.

Applicants will be notified of their accommodation offer via email and there will be a limited time period to accept the accommodation by paying the booking deposit.

Steps to book on campus accommodation:

  • Step 1: Login in the UCD Residences portal with your UCD student ID/student number or the UCD applicant ID and password.
  • Step 2: Provide an accommodation preference, at least 1 (but not more than 3) and allocation of rooms then will occur based on preferences submitted.

Please note, allocation of rooms is subject to availability and UCD Residences cannot guarantee that a student will be allocated the preference of their choice. Information on fees can be found here. The Blackrock campus residence open to UCD Smurfit School students is called Proby House. All other campus accommodation is located in the Belfield campus, a short bus journey from the UCD Smurfit School.
