Companies have found intrusive ways to monetise our data and fuel an ever-increasing amount of ads on our timelines.

Social media is overflowing with advertisements, but that’s the price we pay to use these ‘freemium’ platforms.

Our attention is the hot commodity that social media companies are milking billions from, giving us a platform that’s only free if you choose to get stopped by every internet salesperson on your timeline trying to get you to click that link and buy that ‘viral!’ new product.

Not to mention, our personal data is an even hotter commodity that’s packaged and sold by practically every platform we step our virtual foot into.

But has it become too much? Yes, says Dr Suhas Vijayakumar, an assistant professor of marketing at University College Dublin’s Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School. He specialises in consumer behaviour and ad perception.

“I think we crossed that point [a] long time ago,” he says, referring to the amount of ads we see compared to social media posts now.
