Overview of Bord Bia Scholarships
Bord Bia, the Irish Food Board, acts as a link between Irish food, drink and horticulture suppliers and existing and potential customers throughout the world. Its objective is to develop markets for Irish suppliers and to bring the taste of Irish food to more tables worldwide. With its headquarters in Dublin, Bord Bia has an extensive network of overseas offices.
The Bord Bia Talent Academy offers a range of world-leading post-graduate opportunities. Each participant receives a fully-funded masters from UCD Smurfit School, combined with real world food industry experience, all while receiving a monthly scholarship bursary. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS / ELIGIBILITY
- The candidate must be resident in Ireland or have Irish citizenship. Applicants with citizenship of a limited number of other locations may be considered subject to the availability of placements in those locations, such as: China, Singapore, Japan and Vietnam. In addition, applicants with fluency in other languages may be considered for learning assignment locations such as France, Germany, Spain, Italy and The Netherlands.
- Candidates can demonstrate a coherent narrative outlining how they will use their MSc qualification to contribute to the Irish food, drink and horticulture industry in Ireland and/or overseas.
- Students awarded a scholarship may be required to participate in promotion of the School and Bord Bia Talent Academy Scholarships (interviews/testimonials, A day in the life blog, or other forms of promotional activity as required). Scholars are expected to assist during the recruitment campaigns as ambassadors for the Bord Bia Talent Academy Programmes. They are expected to be ambassadors for their programme and the School during their studies and after graduation.
- Candidates must be available to commence the MSc on the indicated date.
- Scholarship consists of 100% EU fees for the full-time MSc programme and paid a monthly bursary
- The Bord Bia Talent Academy Scholarships will be awarded to candidates deemed to be of the highest calibre by UCD Smurfit School, Bord Bia and Food Industry assessment panel. UCD Smurfit School & Bord Bia reserves the right not to award the Scholarship prize if no candidate of the required calibre is identified (e.g. language fluency). The decision is final and any further correspondence will not be entered into.
- A strong curriculum vitae / resume.
- Minimum 2.1 degree.
- Minimum number of years work experience excluding summer placements, specific to each programme.
- Continuous full-time enrolment and attendance at modules and completion of learning assignments are required to retain a scholarship award.
- A student who withdraws, cancels or becomes inactive, enrols less than full-time, is suspended, or dismissed from the University will lose their scholarship eligibility. A student who takes such a status due to medical reasons may appeal in writing to the Scholarship Committee to have their scholarship reinstated. The appeal must be submitted with supporting documentation, such as a letter from a doctor. In such a case, for there to be a possibility for reinstatement, a student’s leave from the University cannot exceed two consecutive semesters.
- A student who declines an initial offer of admission and accompanying scholarship offer will not retain their scholarship offer if they reapply at a later date nor defer to a future academic year.
- The scholarship is not open to recipients of any other scholarships being awarded or Government grant scheme.
- No cash alternative.
- Canvassing will disqualify.

Scholarships notice
Candidates may apply for a number of scholarships within the school, if they are successful in attaining more than one scholarship, however, they may only accept one scholarship bursary. Scholarship bursaries cannot be added together or combined. Candidates cannot transfer or use one scholarship or bursary between or against another programme. Scholarships and bursaries are also not allowed to be deferred to a future academic year, it is only applicable and awarded to the student for the year they are offered a place in UCD Smurfit. If a student, subsequently, decides to defer their offer they will lose their scholarship or bursary and be required to apply in the future. If candidates are in receipt of a SUSI grant they are not eligible to receive a scholarship.
UCD Smurfit School Scholarships are not applicable to courses in UCD Smurfit Executive Development, UCD Belfield campus or programmes run in conjunction with UCD Belfield including the MSc in Biotechnology and Business, MSc in Biotherapeutics and Business and MSc in International Law and Business.
