Embracing New Opportunities

One of the most significant opportunities this fellowship has afforded me is the travel and exposure to a new market. Relocating to the UAE has been an eye-opening experience. The UAE is a melting pot of cultures from around the world, and doing business with people from such diverse backgrounds has taught me invaluable lessons. There is so much learning to be had simply by immersing yourself in a new country and diving into its food industry.

The Joy of Representing Irish Brands

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the programme for me has been the chance to represent great Irish clients in the region. Ireland is home to some of the best food and drink producers in the world, and being the face of these brands in the middle east has been incredibly rewarding. I've been fortunate to work with two exceptional clients, Silver Hill Duck and OakPark, both of which are in high demand in the region.

Learning to Navigate Autonomy

The fellowship grants a great deal of autonomy, which means you are largely responsible for determining your own schedule. While this sounds ideal in theory, it can be challenging to navigate initially. Over time, I've adjusted and become adept at figuring out what works best for me. This process has taught me to manage my time more effectively, a skill that will undoubtedly benefit me in my future career.

If you are passionate about the food and drink industry, this fellowship is an excellent opportunity. It allows you to move abroad to a vibrant city, represent Irish brands, and earn a master's degree from UCD Smurfit. The experience has been incredibly enriching, both professionally and personally.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the biggest challenges I faced was moving and getting set up in a new country. This was particularly daunting for me as it was my first time moving out of my family home. However, the support network provided by both UCD and Bord Bia was fantastic and made the transition much smoother. I can only imagine how different my experience would have been without this support. Now, as I near the end of the program, I am well-settled and look forward to staying in the UAE for a few more years.

Final Thoughts

Reflecting on my journey from Tayto Snacks to the UAE, I am grateful for the experiences and opportunities this fellowship has provided. From traveling and learning in a new market to representing outstanding Irish brands and gaining autonomy, each aspect has contributed to my growth. For anyone passionate about the food and drink industry, this fellowship is a stepping stone to an exciting and rewarding career.

What's your academic background and previous work experience before joining the programme?

I have a BSc in Food Science and MSc in Food Business and Innovation, having studied both degrees at UCC. Before joining the programme, I previously held roles in Business Development and NPD with a successful Irish food company. I loved my time there and knew I wanted to build on my knowledge by working in a growth market like Southeast Asia.

What types of opportunities have you encountered since undertaking the fellowship?

Since joining the fellowship, I’ve had the opportunity to travel around Southeast Asia on customer visits, represent clients at tradeshows and speak at sector seminars. It has greatly helped my confidence and public speaking ability. Having never visited Asia prior to starting, I have ticked off some bucket list travel experiences like hiking in Indonesia and skiing in Japan. Singapore is so well connected that many trips are close by and can even be done in a weekend.

What has been the most enjoyable aspect of the programme for you so far?

Everyone says it’s the people you meet, but it is true. I’ve made great friends along the way and I know I’ll stay in touch even after the programme is over. The travel opportunities and the endless food options are also a huge plus!

What has been the biggest learning for you?

The importance of networking cannot be overstated, and the sharing of business cards! You never know when you’ll run into the same person again, or when you might need to use those connections. Seeing the potential for Irish food in Asia has been exciting too. We are very lucky to have some of the best food and food standards in the world and that message is spreading.

Why should people consider applying?

It offers you the most unique opportunity to progress both professionally and personally, with the help of supportive teams. For me, Bord Bia’s Singapore office is part of Ireland House, so I really got the chance to build my connections within the Irish business community. This will really stand to you whether you decide to return to Ireland or stay in your chosen market. The travel opportunity, be that for work or personal reasons, was also a highlight for me.

“Truly the best experience of my working life”

Ian Cahill, Bord Bia Fellow in the Middle East, shares his experience of this unique Masters programme in association with UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School

Ian, from Dromcollogher in Limerick, was based in the Middle East as one of 20 Bord Bia Fellows representing leading Irish and international food, drink and horticultural brands in overseas markets. The programme supports the growth of the Irish food, drink and horticultural industry on a global scale, while honing the strategic business development, marketing and business skills of the participant.

Ian graduated in 2014 with a degree from the University of Limerick in business studies with a major in Marketing. Following a successful work placement with Ornua (Irish Dairy Board) while completing his undergraduate degree, the organisation immediately hired him and he worked as a supply chain, logistics and customer service coordinator for two years before applying for the Fellowship programme.

Ian was now based in the Middle East where he explored new strategic routes-to-market for a number of Irish food brands including free range/organic eggs, dairy ingredients/consumer goods, cooked meats, fresh pesto’s and fresh cut flowers across the GCC markets.

Speaking about his experience, Ian said, “The most enjoyable aspect so far has been the exposure to high-level managers of organisations and the opportunity to learn from them. This programme puts you in the room with some key decision-makers. It gives you a sense of purpose from the outset. The most surprising thing for me is the value that these companies place on your input. This really makes you feel valued and respected”.

Successful applicants on the Bord Bia Fellowship programme have their tuition fees fully paid and receive a bursary towards living expenses.
