This module develops participants’ understanding of sustainable supply chain management. Participants will be introduced to the core supply chain functions of operations, purchasing, and logistics. They will also develop technical expertise in supply chain sustainability concepts and will begin to explore how supply chain decisions contribute to the organization’s economic, environmental and social outcomes.

This module is designed to explain and evaluate current thinking in supply chain operations management. Participants will gain a strategic understanding of sustainable operations and be able to apply theories and concepts in a practical setting. The module will review operations management skills and techniques and will introduce the concepts and methods that are useful in understanding sustainable operations management.

This module explores the concepts, principles, and methods used to plan, organize, and manage business logistics activities. The module will cover a range of topics to guide participants in gaining an understanding of sustainable business logistics, to critically examine logistics problems and to transfer the concepts and strategies discussed in class to a practical setting.

This module aims to provide advanced insights into the theory, practices, processes, and current thinking in sustainable procurement and supplier management as well as to give the participants the ability to concisely apply the current theory of procurement and supplier management to practice to create more sustainable supply chains.

This module is designed to provide participants with a detailed understanding of analytical tools and techniques to assist in supply chain planning and control decisions. The focus will be on applying analytics tools to aid practical decision making in sustainable supply chains.

This module is designed to provide participant’s with an opportunity to reflect on and apply what they learned across the previous modules.  Participants will apply their sustainable supply chain management knowledge in a holistic fashion to solve real problems and develop sustainable supply chain solutions and business models.

Through publishing, consulting and teaching they leverage their business expertise and field-based research to deliver programmes, encourage participants to develop new ways of thinking, widen their perspectives and to understand their own challenges and capabilities. The faculty present topics in a range of engaging methods such as ‘action learning’ projects, case studies, role plays, individual assessment and one-on- one coaching, to deliver a unique and lasting learning experience.

Management | UCD Smurfit School

Mark Pagell is the Programme Director for the Diploma in Sustainable Supply Chain Management. He is Full Professor of Global Leadership (Sustainable Supply Chain Management) at the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business.

Professor Pagell does research on topics such as sustainable supply chain management and human resource issues - including providing decent work and protecting employee safety - in supply chain environments. Since receiving his PhD in Operations and Sourcing Management from Michigan State University in 1997 he has published over 100 peer reviewed journal articles in a number of premier outlets. He was the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Supply Chain Management from 2016-2022, was named a Distinguished Scholar for the OSCM Division at the Academy of Management (2020) and spent the 2009-2010 academic year at University College Dublin on a Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship studying sustainable supply chain management.

Dr. Pagell’s research has won a number of awards including best papers published in the Journal of Supply Chain Management), International Journal of Operations and Production Management, and Journal of Operations Management as well as multiple Emerald Citations of Excellence.

Dr Kate Mc Loughlin - Assistant Professor in Management - University  College Dublin | LinkedIn

Kate McLoughlin is an Assistant Professor in Management at University College Dublin. Kate’s research focuses on the role of business for society and explores this concept from varying perspectives including sustainability, ethics, institutional logic, systems thinking, and power. The variety of stakeholders and complex inter-organisational relationships in supply chain networks provide a rich and complex context to explore themes of power, values, and practices as she is interested in political and power discourses in the field. Kate is chair of the ‘Operations, Logistics and Supply Chain Management’ SIG in the British Academy of Management, a member of EurOMA’s Sustainable Operations and Supply Chains Forum, and reviews for a number of leading journals in the field.

Eamonn Ambrose Profile | University College Dublin

Eamonn holds the position of Associate Professor in the School of Business. He is active in teaching, research and the business development activities of the School. Eamonn's research interests are in the areas of healthcare supply chain management and service process innovation. He is active in research on aspects of healthcare such as Emergency Department effectiveness and Huntington's Disease care pathways. He has published in a number of peer reviewed internationally recognised journals and was a Board member of the European Operations Management Association. Eamonn's teaching activity includes design and delivery of courses on Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, and Service Operations. He is Academic Director of the Bachelor of Commerce (International) and was the creator and academic director of the ME(Engineering with Business) programme. In addition Eamonn has developed and delivered executive education courses in a range of sectors. Prior to joining UCD, Eamonn was Engineering Director for Bristol Myers Squibb, and was responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of process plants for developing and manufacturing anti-cancer drugs. He also worked as a consultant advising major multinationals and government agencies in asset management and procurement process improvement.

Enrico Secchi Profile | University College Dublin

Enrico is a lecturer in Supply Chain Management in the School of Business at University College Dublin (UCD). His research focuses on service operations with particular emphasis in the design of customer experiences. His research adopts a multidisciplinary perspective to analyse the relationships between service delivery systems design choices, employees' behaviour, and customer experiences. His doctoral dissertation was a finalist in the Decision Sciences Institute's Elwood S. Buffa award. Enrico has teaching experience in graduate and undergraduate courses in Statistics, Management Science, Operations and Supply Chain Management, and Service Management. Prior to his appointment at UCD, he was assistant professor of operations management at the University of Victoria, Canada. He received his Ph.D. in operations and supply chain management from Clemson University, U.S.A. Before his academic career, Enrico was a junior consultant working with local administrations in the preparation of rural development plans financed through the EU structural funds programme.

Heletje Van Staden Profile | University College Dublin

Heletjé van Staden is an Assistant Professor of Management in the supply chain management area at UCD College of Business. She holds a PhD in Operations Management from KU Leuven, Belgium. Her main research interests lie in sustainable operations decision making under uncertainty, with a focus on advancing the UN sustainable development goals 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), 12 (responsible consumption and production) and 13 (climate action). Research applications include exploring decarbonisation in fashion supply chains, Industry 4.0 driven maintenance optimisation, synchromodal transportation planning and inventory management. She has experience collaborating with logistics service providers aimed at promoting sustainable transportation planning practices. Her work has been published in the European Journal of Operations Research and she has featured in the Irish Times and Vogue Business. At UCD, Heletjé teaches in the areas of logistics, supply chain and operations management. Prior to pursuing her PhD, she held a lecturer position in operations research and financial mathematics at the University of Namibia.

Javier Amaya Silva | Saïd Business School

Javier Amaya is a DPhil in Management candidate at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford supervised by Professor Matthias Holweg and Dr Steve New, interested in the role of Artificial Intelligence on improving firms’ processes, operations and supply chain.

His research takes a multi-faceted approach analysing the potential of AI for accomplishing strategic goals in professional, manufacturing and retail settings, exploring how AI impacts on the organisational performance, and on the ethical and environmental issues of adopting AI technologies.

Earlier in his career, Javier worked advising a different group of organisations, ranging from hi-tech start-ups to government departments in Latin America, Europe and UAE. Javier is a Mechanical Engineer by training and holds an MSc in Engineering and management of Manufacturing Systems from Cranfield University. Javier received the BAE Systems Prize and the International Automotive Components (IAC) Group Prize for the Best Performing Student in Manufacturing and Management Systems.
